If you have ever been on the Internet; and we know you have or you wouldn’t be reading this, you will have heard something about antivirus…whatever the heck that is.

Let’s discuss what a computer virus is and then we can talk about antivirus solutions.

What is a Computer Virus?

Computer viruses are created by computer programmers and can wreak havoc for Internet users. Computer viruses are in fact; computer programs designed to latch on to your hard drive and from there can cause all sorts of damage to your computer. It can change the functionality of your computer; can cause erroneous connections to the Internet as well as steal private information from your personal computer.

The very nature of computer viruses allows them to be spread much like a human virus except that it is done by visiting certain websites or opening an infected email or downloading suspicious programs to your computer.

As scary as this sounds, there is an antivirus solution and that is to get yourself a good antivirus security service.

How Do Antivirus Solution Programs Work?

Due to the significant problems created by computer viruses, an entire niche has been created around these antivirus solution services. There is a huge selection of antivirus security services you can choose from. All of them will offer certain levels of security but none will be 100 percent effective at keeping everything out. One way to monitor this is to always keep your antivirus program updated.

  • Use of Signature Detection: When a programmer creates a program made up of code, within this code is a ‘signature’ of sorts. The antivirus solution program actually scans your computer, drivers and the storage within your hard drive in search of a specific signature that will identify it as a computer virus.
  • Activity: Watching for activity trends and anything that appears suspicious. As mentioned earlier, one of the problems that computer viruses can do is connect to the Internet without authorization as an example.

What to Look For In an Antivirus Solution

Anti Virus solution programs can vary in cost depending on your needs. For this reason it is important for you to think about how great your risk is. If for example you rarely use the Internet, then your risk is low but you would still need protection. If you are a regular and frequent Internet user, then you certainly need an antivirus security program.

There are programs designed for businesses and for home use. For most of us, a program for home use is adequate.

Look for These When Determining Which Program Will Suit Your Needs

  • Regular updates: Will the antivirus security program update automatically? New computer viruses are created daily and for your program to be of value to you, it needs to update your software as often as it discovers new threats. You should be able to set your program up so that it will do these updates automatically.
  • Scanning: Be sure that your program can scan your computer files, incoming and outgoing emails and files that you are downloading and even websites that you visit.
  • Install on multiple computers: Many homes have more than one computer so when you buy an antivirus solution you will want to know if you get a license that allows installation on more than one computer.
  • Cost: Be sure that the program you get will serve your needs and assess your personal computer risk so that you purchase the best program at the best price.

Don’t Put Your Computer and Files at Risk

As soon as you get a new computer, one of the very first things you should do is install an antivirus security solution.
