Internet security is of great importance. The number one thing you as an Internet user can do is to protect everything on your computer so that others don’t get access to it. File deletion is a tool you need to learn how to use properly. We aren’t simply talking about putting your files in the recycle bin and pressing Delete. No, we are talking about deleting unwanted and unused files on your PC permanently.

When you delete your files normally, they go to your recycle or trash bin. You still have access to them while in the bin in case you put them there by mistake. When you empty the bin, you get a second chance to review the files so be sure you want to delete them. Once you empty the bin, the files are gone, at least to your eyes. There are ways that these files can be restored if you know how.

What happens with normal file deletion is that the system removes the files from your site and creates a space on your hard drive that can be overwritten which usually takes care of the situation. But, if not overwritten right away, these files can still be accessed by those who know how.

So, let’s say you are buying a new computer and you have deleted all your files and emptied the bin on your current computer and then you throw it in the trash. You might think no one can find your personal files…wrong. An unscrupulous person might locate your hard drive and do their very best to retrieve your records…most likely passwords and account numbers.  What you want to do is a file deletion that will permanently delete the unwanted files from your computer. You will need a software program to do this.

A few words of caution here are required. Be very careful when deleting files permanently because if you delete the wrong ones, like those that are part of your operating system, your computer won’t work properly. Be very aware of what you are permanently deleting. A very good suggestion is to back up all your files either on an external hard drive or a website that specializes in this service just in case.

How files are permanently deleted.

Common terms used are shredding or wiping. What happens here is the software program writes over your files several times and with different algorithms which will then make them inaccessible by anyone. The algorithms used are often the very same as those used by governments to permanently delete files.

Some antivirus/antispyware programs come with the ability to not only do a disk clean up but to permanently shred those files so that they cannot be retrieved. If yours doesn’t have this capability, then you might need to get an additional software program that will do this.

There are quite a few available programs for a file deleter but be cautious of free programs. Some might be excellent or they might just want access to your computer. Not all free programs are malware or spyware, but just be careful. Do your homework and get recommendations from people or websites that you trust.
