How to Completely Erase Your Web Browser History for Internet Security

by Deborah Marsden and Lee Ann McVey on November 29, 2010

Why would you want to erase your web browser history? The answer is…to keep prying eyes from seeing where you have been on the Internet. It’s like leaving bread crumbs for others to see what you’ve been up to.

In most instances, this would not be a big issue especially on a home computer. Leaving a trail for others to find the sites you have visited can lead to some Internet security risks. If hackers access your computer, they can see where you have been. This includes passwords and account information if you neglected to log off the site before you closed the browser window.

To begin erasing your browser history with Firefox:

  • Click on the Tools tab at the top of your browser window.
  • Click on Options, then the Privacy tab.
  • You now have a few actions you can take. You will see the words “Firefox will” with a field box where you can choose: Remember History, Never Remember History, or Use Custom Settings for History.

The first two choices are self explanatory but the third option gives you more choices. If you Use Custom Settings for History:

  • Select Automatically Start Firefox in a Private Browsing Session. This setting will keep your browsing history private. If this isn’t what you wish, you can make any other choice you want.
  • You can erase your history at any time so if you select the option of having Firefox remember your history for a number of days, you can let Firefox delete the history after that time period, or do it manually or let your antivirus/antispyware program automatically do it for you when you schedule it.

To manually delete your browser history, follow the steps above to go to your Privacy tab, then:

  • In the middle of the page click on the link in blue that reads Clear Your Recent History.
  • A drop down menu appears and gives you a choice of the time frame for deleting the history. You can select now, today, the last few hours or everything.

Cookies are required for many websites to allow access. Every time you visit a website, cookies are installed on your computer so that you are recognized when you return. It is a very good idea to delete the cookies regularly because again, they are footprints for your Internet activity to be viewed.

Don’t worry if you delete cookies and then decide to return to a website because they will be installed again.

Get in the habit of deleting cookies and browser history often. Your computer will run more efficiently and your Internet security is greatly improved.

Thank you for your interest in wishing to post articles on our 1-800 site. At this point, we don’t feel that articles written on massage are along the same theme as this blog was intended for.

But, we are currently working on another blog and we may be able to use something of yours on that blog. To visit our other blog, CLICK HERE.

If you have written anything on how massage therapy helps with keeping one healthy, we’d love to get a sample of your work. You may send this to mousecalls@1-800-showmehow.com

Happy Holidays!
