Not all file types are created equal. What this means is that some files are in formats that aren’t supported by all devices. For this reason it’s necessary to convert the files to a different format that will be supported. In this case we’ll discuss how to convert WMV to MP4 files

WMV is the most common format for video files and it was created by Microsoft. It stands for Windows Media Video.

MP4 is an abbreviation for MPEG-4 which was first developed in 1998. Today MP4 is very popular on mobile phones and computers because it uses a lot less bandwidth than other formats. So if you have a video that is in a larger format, you may want to convert it so you can access it on your phone or other media devices. Plus it will take up much less space on your hard drive.

  • You will need to have a software program that will do the conversion for you.
  • Locate your media file that you want to convert on your computer
  • Make sure that you have a device available to play your video or audio after conversion…Example: iPod. The software program we use has a mobile installer as part of the software package.
  • Run your video converter and select the file you want to convert. You can use the Browse feature to locate it. You can even use a DVD or CD as your input source. You will need to select the path to your source file: E:\Video_TS\Video_TS.IFO. In this case “E” stands for the DVD-ROM or the hard disk drive folder where your DVD is stored. If you have difficulty knowing what the path is for you, be sure to go to the support area of the software you are using to get help.
  • Now that you have selected the input files, you’ll need to indicate the new parameters for the format you desire. Most programs will have pre-sets that you can choose from which should have the most popular ones listed. This makes you life easier.

Some of the most common are:

*Apple iPod – (H.264, 320*240)
* Apple iPod – (H.264, 640*480)
* Apple iPod – (MPEG4, 320*240)

You can always manually edit the parameters to enter the specific settings your device requires.

  • Now that you have the input source and the selected the new parameters for the converted files, you have to tell the program where you want these new files to be stored on your computer. Again, you can use the Browse option to help.
  • Now just tell the program to Convert!
  • Once the conversion has been completed, a notification window will appear and if you also have a mobile uploader as part of your program you can select that and have the new converted files uploaded to your phone.
  • Be sure your phone is connected to your computer for the transfer to take place. Simply follow the instructions you are given by the program.

In summary, this is an overview on how to convert WMV to MP4. There are a number of software programs available to use. Our favourite is AVS4You.
