How to Define Your Brand Identity On Your Website or Blog

by Deborah Marsden and Lee Ann McVey on November 30, 2010

There are a number of reasons to create your own website or blog. You might want to have one for marketing products or services. Or, you may want to have one that you use to define yourself personally, professionally or both. For the latter, most people use a blog.

Regardless of the reason you want to have a website or blog, how you design it, choose the look and feel or determine the content placed on it, will in some way define YOU.

We are all more than our name, looks, age, career and/or religion. These factors make up a part of who we are but they do not define us. We decide how we are defined by what we believe in, our behavior, how we treat others, etc.

Perception is Key When Defining Your Personal Brand

When you create your own website or blog; how you present yourself in your communications and graphic display becomes a part of your brand development. If you have a presence on the net meaning people are checking in on your website, blog or through social media; they will get an impression of you and perceive your brand in their own minds.

How you do brand building on the web is determined by how you are perceived by the larger Internet community. It is all about their perception.

Since perception is the key to brand development you need to be clear on a few things.

  • What are your intentions? What do you want to achieve with your site? Is it an ecommerce site of some sort or do you just want people to get to know you professionally so as to market your skills for a job or service?
  • What are you good at? What skills do you have that are marketable?
  • What do you want others to know about you? Traits like integrity, treating your clients and potential customers with respect and practicing ethical behavior are characteristics you might wish to convey.
  • What problems do your potential customers have that you can solve? Being a problem solver will go a long way when defining who you are using your website or blog.

Keeping focused on how you wish to define yourself is necessary when designing your website or blog. At the end of the day, this is what is known as personal branding. If you don’t understand who you are or how to define yourself, your website visitors certainly won’t be able to either.

Lay Out & Build Your Personal Branding Plan First

Take time to think about what you are all about and what your intentions are for your website before creating logos and tag lines. Only when it has become clear, should you move forward with online branding.
